2. The white pawn can promote to queen, rook, bishop, or knight by advancing to f8. It cannot promote to a king, arid if it moves to f8 it cannot stay on the board as a pawn.
\ The knight can capture the rook on d.3, hut not the bishop on
4, White cannot castle because the black bishop on a6 controls the fl square over which the white king would have to move. You cannot castle through check.
5. There are four mates in one: ©a2-al, Sa2-bl, ®a2-g2, and Sa2-h2. Note the enormous versatility of the queen in giving checkmate from different directions.
