The pieces on the first rank are all identified by a figurine: King, S-Queen, S-Rook, &-Knight, A-Bishop. The first item of information given in recording a move is the move number— 1,2,3,4,5, and so on. Next comes the initial letter identifying the piece; then the coordinates of the square from which it moves; then the coordinates of the square on which it lands. Thus, in the diagrams on page 47, White's opening move would be recorded as 1 ^gl-B and Black's response as £lb8-c6.
