A White pawn had been accidentally knocked off the board. Neither player could remember for sure on which square it stood. Holmes studied the position awhile. "I'm afraid it is not determinable from the position alone where the pawn must be. I will need to know something about the history of the game. Are there any facts you can tell me?"

"Well," replied one of the players, "neither king has yet moved. Is that any help?"

"Let's see now," replied Holmes as he studied the position further. "Why yes, indeed, it is of help! I now know where the pawn must be. " Where?
